Members & Events Bill Baxter, Sarah Frey, Jayne Herring, Judy Myers, Sheila Scholl, Gary Staudacher, Lynn Tracy, Alice Winkler, Ron Winkler, Sarah Yanett Bill Baxter says joining
the PAC in 2001 was one of the best things he's ever done. Bill learned
of the PAC through fellow members Ron and Alice Winkler. He had just begun
to racewalk and the PAC was a natural progression. Bill enters many races
during the season. He has won the last three Fox Cities Half Marathon/Powerwalk
events in the 65 and over age group. In fact, Bill owns the course record
for that age group. Bill was a Marquette University Journalism professor
in the 1980's. He enjoys sports writing for publication. Bill winters
in Florida, and manages to enter 8-10 races in the Sunshine State. Sarah and several other PAC members had been training with Mike Rohl at a Milwaukee-area Vic Tanny. In1992 he stopped coaching the group and suggested the somewhat newly formed Parkside Athletic Club. Over a decade later, it is the good friends, friendly competition, and motivation to work out that keeps Sarah coming week after week-even after the birth of her first child, Harry, in May of 2001. Sarah met her husband Steve while training with Rohl and continued their budding romance into their participation in PAC. Sarah has run one marathon and racewalked six. Her fastest mile racewalking was a 9:17 and fastest running was about 6:00. Sarah is now running, which is also "allowed" during the weekly PAC workouts. When not working out or taking care of Harry, Sarah practices her art. She goes to her studio once a week to paint and is working on selling her art work. Sarah also enjoys yoga, taking photographs, and designing web sites. Top Index Jayne joined PAC in 1993. For years, while power walking she had been "run over" by racewalkers training along Kenosha's lakefront and wished she could walk that fast. She says she still can't walk that fast, but walks a whole lot faster and enjoys it immensely. Thanks to the muscles developed through racewalking, she has been able to return to running after injuries twenty years before had previously made it too painful. Jayne made a commitment to daily exercise almost 25 years before and has missed fewer than 30 days in all those years. She says the club's workout schedule helps maintain that discipline and gets her out of exercise ruts. Jayne considers the club members among her closest friends. Jayne has a freelance public relations/ marketing business and is a part time news reporter at a public radio station, where she also provides web site design and maintenance. Besides walking, running, and bicycling, Jayne enjoys spending time with husband Gary Staudacher, their basset hound Mason, and gardening. Top Index The PAC's current president, Judy joined the club in 2000. She joined to learn how to race walk, and stays for the "great people" and "top coach." Judy is also an active racer. She finished second in the 2002 Fox Cities Powerwalk, and completed the 2001 Lakefront and 2002 Disney marathons. She also grabbed a first place trophy in the USATF outdoor 5K race in 2002. Judy works at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. She is married to Charlie and has a dog, Selma. Judy is currently learning to play guitar on her Gibson SG. Top Index Sheila joined PAC in 1991. Her interest began when she took a Community Outreach class in walking (not racewalking). But PACer, Tracy, was there the first night of class "going 100 miles an hour". Sheila was stunned--her only goal at the time was to complete the class. And many years later Sheila is still walking. She says she keeps trying and one of these years she's going to DO IT! Don't let "Sheila Talk" fool you. She has participated in many marathons and half marathons. While winning none, she is surprised by the miracle of not always finishing last. Sheila is a part-time receptionist at Progressive Chiropractic. She loves reading--particularly mysteries--and cooking and baking (a hobby from which PAC members frequently benefit). Top Index Gary joined the PAC
in 1999 at the urging of his wife and PACer Jayne Herring. He is a runner,
and is grateful the club accepted a blatant "lifter." Gary considers Wednesday
"race night" and adjusts his workout schedule accordingly. He especially
values the friendships of Coach Dewitt and everyone in the PAC. He says
half the fun of the evening is conversing with PACers prior to the workout.
Gary's most memorable race was the 2003 Lake Geneva 25K, when he placed
third in his age group. It was the longest distance he had ever run. Gary
has been a private investigator the past 17 years. He enjoys racquetball,
fishing and gardening, and his beloved 11-year-old Bassett Hound, Mason. Better known as Tracy, she joined the PAC in 1990. An avid speed walker, Tracy was threatened with arrest for her fast walking in a Racine mall. Eventually, she learned of Mike Dewitt and the PAC, (both legal) and the rest is history. Tracy is known as the Fashion Police Officer, roughing up club members who wear drab or mismatched workout gear. She credits the club for her sanity and called the PAC the best group she has ever known. Tracy has walked to first place finishes in a number of races across the county. She is most proud of setting the American and World Age-Group record by walking a swift 15.43 3K in 1999 at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee. Tracy is an animal lover, volunteering at various area animal organizations. She currently trains dogs and does computer graphics work for area businesses. She has three of her own dogs, Rock, Sophie and Kelly. She also enjoys gardening. Top Index Alice is one of the charter members of the PAC, joining in 1992. She had been race walking, but needed the help of a group and coach to improve her technique and speed. Alice values the monthly training schedule and the friendship and support of the PAC. Alice is a frequent competitor in races around the country. Her last award came in the Parkside 3K, when she walked 20.50. She walked 35.58 in the 2000 Eugene National 5K, and 35.11 in the 1998 Maine Nationals 5K. Alice is married to fellow PACer Ron Winkler. She is a diagnostic teacher with the Milwaukee Public Schools. She volunteers with the Badgerland Striders and the Special Olympics. Alice also enjoys traveling and hiking, yoga, piano, writing and gardening. Top Index Ron Winkler came to the PAC as a renowned runner, but shifted gears in 1993 and now is an active racewalker. Ron and wife, Alice, joined PAC in 1992. Ron cites the social aspect of PAC and the discipline of the workouts for his continued membership in the club. Ron's best mile run was 4:20 in college. He also ran a 10:00 two-mile and a 26.50 rive mile. He also ran the 1982 Lakefront Marathon in 2:53--against a strong wind. Ron has won his age group walking the 3K in the Badger State Games each year since 1996. Ron is a chemist at Aldrich Chemical in Milwaukee. In his spare time, Ron enjoys writing articles on Bay View and Milwaukee history. He also conducts historic tours of Mil3waukee and Bay View. Top Index Sarah Yannett needed an alternative to running after a serious leg injury-and race walking more than filled the bill. In fact, Sarah said she enjoys walking more than running, thanks to the PAC and the coaching of Mike Dewitt. Sarah enjoys the feedback of club members and their tips have steadily increased her speed. She also enjoys the collective humor of the PAC. Sarah completed her first Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in 2002, walking a brisk 5.42. She bettered that mark the following year, walking 5.36. Sarah has two children and is a graduate student in Educational Psychology at UWM. She is a part-time French teacher at St. Robert School in Shorewood. Top Index
